The Fullerton College Art Gallery begins its new series of exhibits for the spring semester with V!sual Resistance. The exhibit offers viewpoints on social justice, politics and more by four artists: April Bey, Gomez Bueno, Dwora Fried and Narsiso Martinez. An opening reception will be Thursday, Feb. 1 at 5 p.m. in the gallery located in Building 1000, Room 1004.

The exhibit will also be a stop on the Fullerton Art Walk on Friday, Feb. 2 from 6-8 p.m. During the Art Walk, students and guests alike are invited to participate in an activist poster project outside the gallery and draw with other artists for free with EASL’s Costume Figure Drawing Workshop with live figure models in Building 1000, Room 1020.

“In the same way that this group of artists has engaged with politics, we want to encourage our students and community members to be active participants, not just in making art, but in joining the conversation about the role that art plays in our daily lives,” said art faculty member Kristin Mihaylovich.

Bey’s work draws from her Caribbean background focusing on American and Bahamian culture, immigration, race and other social issues. Along with being a mixed-media artist, she teaches art courses and is a professor at Glendale Community College.

Bueno focuses on pop culture and the critique of modern society through posters, paintings, murals, art installations and more.

Fried creates small glass-fronted boxes filled with various objects including dolls, furniture, photographs and fabrics. Her experience growing up as a Jewish, lesbian and child of holocaust survivor are reflected in the sense of isolation that her art evokes.

Martinez completed high school at 29, and throughout his life worked at picking crops from fields. He depicts the struggle of field workers using leftover produce boxes to illustrate portraits of these workers.

V!sual Resistance runs through Feb. 21 and the gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon and from 2 to 4 p.m. Admission is always free, for more information, visit http://art.fullcoll.edu/event_exhibitions.php.
