California Community Colleges: Trauma Informed Practices to Best Support College Student Success

April 22, 2021 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Description: This workshop will begin by reviewing important themes that arise in the complex, diverse experiences of our undocumented students, such as those that deal with identity, fear, and coming out. The session will then move on to explore trauma, its impact on learning and behavior, as well as classroom practices faculty can adopt to increase equity. The workshop will conclude by discussing joy and allyship. After attending, participants will be able to identify and implement practical tips for fostering a trauma informed approach.

Facilitated by: Esther Villegas-Sandoval is a sociology professor at College of the Canyons.  She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from California State University, Northridge, where she focused her studies on the experiences of undocumented college students in Southern California. Professor Villegas-Sandoval strives to foster equity in her classrooms as well as agency and well-being in her students.
