Jason De León: Hostile Terrain (September 19-26, 2019)

September 19, 2019 N/A -

Organized by the NOCCCD office of Diversity and Compliance

Located in the School of Fine Art Lobby- Cypress College

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 – Thursday, SEPTEMBER 26, 2019

This global pop-up installation and wall-map by anthropologist Jason De León, author of The Land of Open Graves: Living and Dying on the Migrant Trail, asks visitors to fill toe-tags with information about the 3,000+ people who have died trying to cross into the U.S. through the Sonoran Desert over the past 25 years, and whose bodies have been found.

The goal of this exhibition is to raise awareness about the United States' brutal immigration enforcement policy known as “Prevention Through Deterrence” that has and continues to claim the lives of thousands of people since the mid-1990’s. Located in the Fine Arts Department Lobby, Cypress College, next to the Art Gallery.

Hostile Terrain is a precursor to the 2020 global participatory exhibition titled “Hostile Terrain 94curated by Dr. De León.
