Flyer for Banned Books Essay Contest

The Fullerton College Library is hosting its 2nd Annual Banned Books Essay Contest!
First Place Prize $200
Second Place Prize $100
Third Place Prize $50
Essays must be 500-1,000 words and are Due October 12, 2018
Topic: Answer ONE of the following prompts in essay form:

  • What are the consequences of banning books that some people or groups deem inappropriate?
  • Referencing the book you have chosen, answer the following question: In what way(s) did reading a controversial book liberate you?
  • Using examples from your chosen text, argue for the benefits of reading a potentially controversial book.
  • Explain why you feel the banning/censoring of your selected text was (not) justified for its time.

    CONTEST RULES:
    Fullerton College 2018 Banned Books Contest Rules:
    Eligibility: All currently enrolled Fullerton College students are eligible to participate.
    Steps:
    1.) Select and read a Banned Book: A Banned Book can be defined as, “any book that has been banned, censored, challenged or restricted.” The selected book can be any verifiably banned or challenged book, but all students are encouraged to select asuitable college reading level book. Ask any FC librarian with assistance in selecting or researching a Banned Book. The book does not have to be one from the FC Library.
    2.) Write a 500-1000 word essay answering any one of the four essay questions on the reverse of this flyer using supporting ideas from the Banned Book of your choosing.
    3.) Submit your essay (.docxor .doc format only) to the Student Programming Librarian, Val Macias, at vmacias@fullcoll.eduwith the subject line “2018 Essay Contest Submission” on or before OCTOBER 12, 2018 by 3:00 P.M. Include your first name, last name and Banner ID number on the essay. Use of the MLA format is encouraged. No hand-delivered paper submissions please. Any submissions sent after the posted date will not be considered.
    Judging Criteria:
    FC judging faculty will look for the following criteria in the essays:

    Organization

    Strength of argument

    Adherence to the prompt

    Supporting details

    Format

    Language mechanics (i.e. grammar, spelling, and punctuation)
    Three winners (First, Second and Third Place) will be announced on October 22, 2018. The prizes are as follows:

    $200 cash card for First Place

    $100 cash card for Second Place

    $50 cash card for Third Place
    Certificates of Achievement will be issued to the winners and Certificates of Participation will be awarded to all participants upon request. An essay reading event is planned in which all participants are invited to attend.

    Academic Honesty:
    Fullerton College’s policy on plagiarism fully applies. Participating students who submit essays are responsible for submitting academically honest work. Students are expected to submit original written work, with credit given to any sources where required, which includes thefull, proper and complete use of citations and Works Cited pages in their work. Essays with suspected plagiarism will regrettably get disqualified from contention.
