Coming together for a common purpose!
Reach for Excellence is a unique
mentoring, career and leadership development program that assist
students with identifying and achieving their goals using the
African American/Black experience.
Students complete career and personal assessment with a counselor,
participating workshops, seminars, field trips, and internships.
Additionally, student are matched with a mentor for support,
guidance, and information about careers or work. Students can also
document leadership skills and community service on the college
transcript that can be used for scholarships, university
personal statements and employment.

Life is comprised of a series of tasks
and events which allow opportunities to both lead and follow.
R4E was designed for both. Become a part of R4E mentoring program
today! "Surround yourself
yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher" Oprah
Winfrey R4E mentoring
program uses a three tier mentoring model. Based upon career and
personal assessment outcomes, students are placed with a Fullerton
College faculty/staff, community leader or peer mentor. Students and
mentors arrange to meet a minimum of twice a month during the
academic semester.

- Gain knowledge, insight and
techniques to succeed.
- Build dynamic professional
relationships.
- Participate in workshops,
seminars and field trips.
It takes the commitment of a semester
to experience the opportunity of a lifetime. |
- To enhance the development of
basic skills and proved strategies for improving academic
performance.
- To encourage successful course
completion and increased transfer rates.
- To introduce students to campus
resources so they can use them to their best advantage.
- To help students develop
effective communication skills so that they may find their
voices and achieve a sense of belonging, confidence and
self-esteem.
- To develop and enhance students'
cultural awareness of the Black experience and history through
courses, events and activities that involve the Black community!

COURSEWORK |
As part of their participation in the
Umoja Experience, students will work with a counselor to ensure
that the following coursework is a part of their student education
plan. The courses promote personal and academic growth in three main
areas:
Basic Skills:
All students seeking a degree, must show college-level
proficiency in English and Math:
- Math (course level is dependent
upon placement
exam results)
- English (course level is
dependent upon placement
exam results)
- Reading (course level is
dependent upon placement
exam results)
Cultural Enrichment:
Ethnic studies courses help
to develop and
enhance your knowledge and understanding of African-American
culture:
- ETHS 129F Introduction to African American
Studies (3 units)
- ETHS 131F African-American History II (3
units)
Student Development & Lifelong
Skills:
Students will benefit from the following two counseling courses
designed to help you develop academic and college survival skills,
explore career options, develop an academic education plan,
identify lifetime goals and discuss any personal issues:
- COUN 151F - Career & Life Planning (3
units)
- COUN 101F - The College Experience (2
units)
